The beach area located on the southern coast of Formentera is known as Migjorn and stretches for approximately 8 kilometers. Its ends are marked by the beginning of the cliffs that lead us to Es Cap de Barbaría on one side, and the start of the rugged terrain that takes us towards La Mola.

When people in Formentera refer to “going to Migjorn beach” or say “the sea will be better in Migjorn today” we use these terms in a generic way, not referring to a specific section of the beach, but rather any of the beaches found in this part of Formentera.

How to get to Migjorn

To access any of the beach sections that make up Migjorn, whether by car, motorcycle, or bicycle from La Savina, you need to take the main road (PM-820) and drive south, skirting the town of Sant Francesc without entering it, and continue driving towards Sant Ferran.

After leaving the town of Sant Ferran, approximately 1 kilometer later, you will find a right turn indicating the direction of Ca Marí. This would be the first access point to reach the Migjorn area. But that’s not the only one.

Continuing along the main road, you will find numerous dirt paths that, branching off to the right, will lead you to the different beaches that make up the “beach” of Migjorn in Formentera. The last access point that would take you to the southernmost part of Migjorn would be the road that leads to Es Copinar beach, 1 kilometer after the town of Es Caló de Sant Agustí.

If you prefer public transportation, you have the option of taking bus line 2 from La Savina and Sant Francesc, which makes stops at Ca Marí beach and Es Copinar beach before heading towards La Mola.
As of the time of writing this text, there are no additional stops at the other beaches in the Migjorn area.

Eating at Migjorn

This stretch of beach on the coast of Formentera offers the most options for beach restaurants and kiosks on the entire island. As mentioned earlier, you will find areas where you won’t have access to any services, but in most cases, reaching the nearest restaurant would not require a walk of more than 10 minutes.

The Migjorn coast has 5 beach kiosks located in different sections of the beach, as well as a wide range of restaurants. You can find traditional island cuisine at places like Vogamarí beach or La Fragata beach, as well as more innovative options at Es Codol Foradat beach or restaurants that combine different culinary techniques while maintaining a traditional base at Es Copinar beach.

At any of the kiosks in the Migjorn area, you can enjoy food and drinks according to the different options available at each one. So, consider this possibility when planning to spend the day and have a meal at Migjorn beach in Formentera.

Lifeguards in Migjorn

Despite the extensive stretch of Migjorn, the only area along this coast with a permanent presence of lifeguards is at Es Arenals beach. At this lifeguard station, they have jet skis that can reach any point in Migjorn in case of an accident, provided that a call is made to 112 emergency services.

It’s also worth mentioning that rental companies for sunbeds and umbrellas on all the beaches of Formentera are required to have a certified lifeguard on duty. In areas where the lifeguard service by the Consell Insular de Formentera is not available, this service should still be ensured.

In any case, if you encounter an accident in the sea or on Migjorn beach and the presence of lifeguards is not apparent, it is important to call 112 immediately, and they will manage the emergency response.

Nudism

The majority of the Migjorn area in Formentera is highly suitable for nudism enthusiasts.

With the exception of Es Arenals beach, which attracts a similar crowd to that of Illetes beach, the rest of the beaches in the Migjorn area are ideal for nudism. With small secluded spots nestled between rocky outcrops and white sand, nudism has been normalized in Migjorn since the early days of Northern European tourism in Formentera.

The first hippies who discovered the turquoise waters and the freedom to enjoy the sun fully naked in Formentera helped establish and normalize this practice, even among the local residents of the 1960s. This tradition has endured over the years.
