Everything you need to know about Es Còdol Foradat
Es Còdol Foradat Beach in Formentera is situated in the central part of the Migjorn coast.
We can describe it as a narrow beach where sand is usually abundant. There are rock formations scattered along the shore, creating small secluded corners, especially towards the northern end. At the southern end of Es Codol Foradat Beach, you will find several fishing huts that mark the approximate limit of the beach.
Along this stretch of coast, there is a concession for renting loungers and umbrellas. The owners of the concession are responsible for maintaining a lifeguard service during the central hours of the day.
Please note…
The word “còdol” in Catalan can be translated as “pebble,” and “foradat” means “with a hole.” On the left side of the shore of this beautiful beach located in Migjorn, you will find a large rock that breaks the continuous line of sand.
During the years when the beach doesn’t have much sand, you will see that this rock has a big hole, and you can even crawl through them. This rock and the hole are what give this beach its name, “Es Còdol Foradat.”

How to get to Es Còdol Foradat
Take the main road (PM-820) and pass the two roundabouts at the entrance of the town of Sant Francesc. Continue in the direction of Sant Ferran, crossing through the town.
From there, keep driving without deviating from the main road towards the north for approximately 3 km until, on the right side of the road, you see a sign announcing the restaurant located on the beach of Es Còdol Foradat.
Take that dirt road and follow the signs until you reach the beach; you can’t miss it. Keep in mind that it is a long, dusty road, and in many sections, it is narrow, very narrow, and passes very close to various houses.
This means that at times, you will need to pull over to the side of the road to allow oncoming traffic to pass, and similarly, at other times, someone will stop to let you pass. Try to be empathetic with other vehicles and facilitate the flow of traffic on this rural road. By the way, remember to moderate your speed if you are driving a car or a motorcycle.
In general, do not drive fast on the roads of Formentera; you are not participating in a rally.
Parking at Es Còdol Foradat
Es Còdol Foradat Beach in Formentera does not have a particularly large parking area.
Right in front of the only restaurant in the area, and where the access road to this beach leads us, there is a parking area where we can leave our car, motorcycle, or bicycle. It is important to consider the other vehicles that will be accessing Es Còdol Foradat Beach in order to maximize space and facilitate the arrival and departure of other visitors’ vehicles to this area of Migjorn, without blocking the flow of traffic.
Similarly, just after the mentioned parking area, there is another space where we can park. This section was initially intended for owners of the boat sheds, but over time, it has been reduced to facilitate the access of visitors by car or motorcycle.
Beyond that, you will encounter a barrier that, under no circumstances, should be lifted to park in that coastal area.
Eating at Es Codol Foradat
Es Codol Foradat Beach has only one restaurant right on the beach, making it the sole dining option in this section of Migjorn. There are no nearby beach kiosks or supermarkets where you can stock up on drinks or food.
It’s important to keep this in mind if you plan on spending the entire day at this beautiful beach in Formentera and enjoying its crystal-clear waters and sunbathing on the white sand of Migjorn.

When to choose Es Còdol Foradat
Like the rest of the beaches in the Migjorn area, Es Còdol Foradat is a great choice on days when the wind blows from the east and north.
If you visit Es Còdol Foradat on a calm sea day, we propose a little adventure. Grab your snorkel gear and try to find the wreckage of a sunken ship located about 50 meters from the shore in the central part of the beach.
It’s worth mentioning that the wreckage is not always visible as it depends on the amount of sand accumulated on the seafloor at that moment. However, if conditions are favorable, you will see and discover one of the secrets of Es Còdol Foradat.
Due to its south-facing orientation, on days when the wind blows from that direction, Es Còdol Foradat Beach can experience waves that may pose a problem and danger for swimming. In such circumstances, we recommend that you head to one of the beaches on the east coast of Formentera, such as Llevant, Ses Canyes, or Es Pujols.
